The Washington Wind Symphony is proud to present “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Albert Hague and Eugene Poddany. Composed as a tribute to promote Russian-American unity, “Russian Christmas Music” was completed in just 14 days when Reed was only 23 years old. It is known for its Tchaikovsky-esque finale and has become immensely popular among wind ensemble fans. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a delightful homage to Dr. Seuss’ beloved story, and this arrangement by Larry Clark skillfully combines the songs “Welcome Christmas” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” evoking cherished memories of the timeless animated musical comedy. Both pieces are certain to leave a lasting impact on audiences.
With a message of embracing love and unity, Katahj Copley’s “Halcyon Hearts” has been making waves since its release. Copley’s composition celebrates the power of passion and is a reminder to choose love even in the face of adversity. Similarly, Steve Reisteter’s “The Eighth Candle” pays homage to the story of Hanukkah, capturing the essence of the holiday season through its hymn-like sections and celebratory dance. Both works are powerful reminders of the importance of celebrating peace and love.
